Religious Trauma Syndrome: What in the World Is It?
Religious Trauma Syndrome is not an actual diagnosis and is not included in the most recent version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM 5). However, this does not mean that it is non-existent or doesn’t impact millions of individuals every single year. Religion can easily be weaponized, and sayings can be twisted to fit the agenda of the messenger. Shame, guilt, and condemnation can be among many of the harmful messages communicated which can lead to lasting and deep mental health wounds. Other terms for "Religious Trauma Syndrome" are "Church Hurt" or "Spiritual Abuse".
From a clinical perspective, the best way to help someone recover from Religious Trauma Syndrome is through modalities that are heavily focused on treating trauma and challenging the way an individual thinks as they begin their healing journey. Some of those modalities are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, EDMR, and Trauma Informed Modalities.
As a Christian Therapist, there are not many modalities that teach you how to incorporate the Holy Spirit. Many people who have been wounded within the church community battle with trusting others and themselves, shame, guilt, low self-esteem, anxiety, and so much more.
Spiritually and biblically healing is also brought through the Word of God and the understanding that it was the organization that hurt that individual and not God. One is, Watch out for wolves in sheep’s clothing ( Matthew 7:15 ) One of the things I love about having a relationship with the Lord and being a Licensed Therapist is that God will guide me on how to treat my clients by pulling from biblical references and my clinical training and knowledge. These two together are so powerful in the counseling room. I love to teach others how to flow this way as well. Over the years, I have counseled so many people who have experienced this and I have had similar experiences in my walk as a Christian as well. I share great details about my testimony HERE and share a "right now message" that is in God's heart concerning this. I have already received so much feedback on this message and how it has blessed so many! I hope that it blesses you too.
