Christian Therapist, Overcome Imposter Syndrome!
Last week, I talked about how God called me to be a Christian Therapist back in 2017. Since then, it has been a journey and I have had the honor and privilege to mentor and encourage other Aspiring and Existing Christian Therapists along the way whether that was in my mentorship group, my email list, doing lives, blogs, those who have worked with me, and for me over the years. I truly love to see others grow in this space because I know the Father's heart concerning the wellbeing of his Sons and Daughters. One of the areas that I did have to overcome, and you may struggle with is Imposter Syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is a common experience among many individuals, including those who identify as Christian Therapists or would like to offer this in their practice. What is Imposter Syndrome? According to Google, Imposter syndrome is the condition of feeling anxious and not experiencing success internally, despite being high performing in external, objective ways. This condition often results in people feeling like "a fraud" or "a phony" and doubting their abilities. Here are two major tips that I want to share with you to help you to overcome Imposter Syndrome.
Remember that operating in this vein is a journey and as you continue to study, grow professionally, spiritually, and study the word of God for yourself, YOU WILL GROW.
As Christian Therapists, we will not know it all. We are not supposed to. There will be areas and situations that come up during a client session that you will need to study and receive consultation on. There may be some that you need to refer out. Either way, it is okay. The word of God says For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. (1 Corinthians 12:14-20) You are necessary, and you add value to the Body of Christ and his people. Remember that.
In the fall of 2022, the Lord put it on my heart to do a series called, “10 Stumbling Blocks for Christian Leaders”. It was so good and one of the areas that I the Holy Spirit gave me was about guess what, “Imposter Syndrome”. This is for you too because, after all, you are a Christian Leader.
