Becoming Unashamed

When you hear the word shame, what do you think about? What feelings come up for you? What event do you think about in your life or maybe even someone else’s life?

I feel like the word shame carries a lot of weight but at the same time, it is overlooked because of the way it makes us feel. Feelings of shame can linger for seconds, minutes, days, months, and even years. Many people are so quick to cover up shame because of the way shame makes us feel. We can feel shame for several reasons. I want to address a few of those areas briefly here.

Body Shame

Body shame is a common experience, particularly in a culture that places great importance on physical appearance. When we feel ashamed of our bodies, it can lead to negative feelings about ourselves, including low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. Shame can be brought on by comments that others have made about us including family members. It can be brought on by some type of physical and/or sexual abuse.

Parental Shame

Parental shame can arise from a variety of experiences, including neglect, abuse, or simply feeling like we have failed as parents. When we feel ashamed of our parenting abilities, it can lead to feelings of guilt, anxiety, and low self-worth. It can also impact our relationships with our children, as we may struggle to communicate effectively or set healthy boundaries.

Sexual Shame

Sexual shame can arise from a variety of experiences, including sexual abuse or trauma, feeling like we are not living up to societal expectations. I have counseled many people who have a hard time being intimate with their significant other due to their view of sex and experience many triggers from their past.

Mental Health Shame

Mental health shame can arise from a variety of experiences, including feeling like we are not living up to societal expectations around mental health, or feeling like we are weak or flawed for struggling with our mental health. When we feel ashamed of our mental health, it can lead to feelings of isolation, hopelessness, and despair. It can also impact our ability to seek out help and support, as we may feel like we should be able to handle things on our own.

Religious Shame

Religious shame can arise from feeling like we are not living up to the expectations of our faith community or feeling like we are not worthy of God's love and forgiveness. When we feel ashamed of our religious beliefs or practices, it can lead to feelings of guilt, anxiety, and low self-worth. It can also impact our relationship with God, as we may struggle to feel like we are truly worthy of his love and forgiveness.

Shame from Past Mistakes

This is one of the hardest types of shame to have in my opinion. Many people walk around in shame due to the mistakes that they have made in the past. Whether it was by accident or intentional the weight of feeling and they punish themselves.  There is hope for you to Become Unashamed.

This is something that the Body of Christ deals with. Many people are told to just pray about it and seek out deliverance. Deliverance can happen in a variety of ways. If we look at how Jesus healed people, He used a variety of ways to heal them and provided them with specific instructions. In other words, the Lord provided them with strategy to help them to receive breakthrough. When dealing with shame, it is not different. Sometimes, we do not know how to overcome certain situations in our lives. I have seen first-hand how shame can be debilitating to your mental health and spiritual health angry.
